OPINION UNLOCKED: A Recession Rant

Something's funny about this recession - it's in the words, not the numbers.

As I watch news coverage of the ongoing economic crisis and responsive stimulus legislation, I am constantly reminded of Abbott and Costello's “Who’s on First” routine, where the comics discuss names of their team's baseball players:

Abbott:  Well, let's see, we have on the bags, Who's on first, What's on second, I Don't Know is on third...

Costello: That's what I want to find out.

Abbott: I say Who's on first, What's on second, I Don't Know's on third.

Costello: Are you the manager?

Abbott: Yes.

Costello: You gonna be the coach too?

Abbott: Yes.

Costello: And you don't know the fellows' names?

Abbott: Well I should.

In October 2008, when the sky was falling, and several of the biggest entities in the financial system collapsed, economists and journalists couldn't bring themselves to say the "R" word.  It was official, the U.S. was in a recession.

Deep in a recession, as it turned out.  This recession started nearly a full year earlier, in December 2007.  The National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), who makes the call based on economic statistics over a period of months, allowed us to endure the collapse of the financial system without an official proclamation.

Costello: Well then who's on first?

Abbott: Yes.

Costello: I mean the fellow's name.

Abbott: Who.

Costello: The guy on first.

Abbott: Who.

Costello: The first baseman.

Abbott: Who.

While economists and journalists did focus on the credit crisis, conveying the dire nature of what they were seeing, making suggestions that we might be heading toward the unthinkable – a Great Depression Sequel – we still couldn’t use the word.  Recession.

Then, in December (after it was announced we had been in a recession all along), the press sought to make up for lost time.  Missing out on a full year's worth of recession talk, they cut loose with a flurry of descriptors:  a deep recession, prolonged recession, economic crisiscatastrophe, financial disaster and my personal favorite, the worst downturn since the Great Depression.

Costello: The guy playing...

Abbott: Who is on first!

Costello: I'm asking YOU who's on first

Abbott: That's the man's name.

Costello: That's who's name?

Abbott: Yes.

Costello: Well go ahead and tell me.

Abbott: That's it.

Costello: That's who?

Abbott: Yes.

750 banks fell within months of the 1929 stock market crash which began The Great Depression.  As many as 9,000 banks continued to fail during the 1930's.  FDIC Insurance was nonexistent, so people simply lost their money when their bank ran out of funds.

13 banks have failed so far in 2009.  Another 25 failed in 2008.

The contemporary government response has been swift, if not altogether logical.

Deposits up to $250,000 are now guaranteed by the federal government.  Under the TARP bailout program, banks may be given funds to keep them solvent and lending.  There is a fair amount of confusion over the purpose of the program and whether healthy banks or failing ones are actually seeing the government support.  Some initial money went to Citigroup, a behemoth multi-national organization considered "too big to fail" following the events in October of 2008, when investment bank Bear Sterns failed and cracked the confidence of the entire financial system.

Costello: Look, you gotta first baseman?

Abbott: Certainly.

Costello: Who's playing first?

Abbott: That's right.

Costello: When you pay off the first baseman every month, who gets the money?

Abbott: Every dollar of it.

The initial $700 billion bailout was passed in November of last year and was renamed a recovery package in December.  That was soon followed by a $789 billion stimulus bill.  And as furious as we all are concerning the astounding numbers, be ready for toxic asset and real estate stabilization plans which will likely total even more than these first two.

Only $500 billion of the stimulus bill is true government spending.  The rest is tax relief or, in the case of the bailouts, investments in companies that should, in theory (worked before in Sweden), allow the government to recoup the invested money in a few years.

Costello: All I'm trying to find out is the fellow's name on first base.

Abbott: Who.

Costello: The guy that gets...

Abbott: That's it.

Costello: Who gets the money...

Abbott: He does, every dollar. Sometimes his wife comes down and collects it.

Costello: Whose wife?

Abbott: Yes.

The original stimulus bill was designed to create 2-4 million new jobs.  Then, as the economy began losing a 500,000 jobs a month, the language changed to "save or create" 3-4 million jobs.

As the greatest economy in known history, some politicians and reporters seem quite confident in this measure to jump start and turn our economy around, marking this week as a major milestone on the road to recovery.

A more reasonable assessment is that it will soften the blow and make the long-lasting recession slightly more tolerable.

More reasonable is that it will soften the blow and make the recession more endurable.

Free-people, look what happened to the Japanese in the (10) year period from the same "Stimulus Plan" in which we live under now. (Approx. From 1996 to 2006). They went into a recession/depression that their Leaders apologized for. Look at them this week, Asian Markets are far...DOWN!

Don't be fooled, most of the thousands of these Jobs will be in the Construction Industry which will be Temporary. The Infra-Structure does need to be Rebuilt...but what happens when these jobs end for you?

A question! How many of our Un-Employed are able to work in Construction? Actually, not many because of the Physical Restraints. I worked this industry in my Early Years, and if you have any-what a Physical or Emotional Problem, you cannot do this!

The answer is Reaganomics, Trickle-down Money from "Tax Breaks". This Plan is proven to work, and will put Money into our hands "Almost Immediately" to pays Bills, Mortgages, and buy new Products.

There are millions of unemployed that CAN do construction work. They will, inturn, buy at retail stores who, inturn will purchase more inventory fron manufacturors and importers who, inturn will hire more people to oporate their busineses, Etc. Etc.
Trickle down wont work because #1 it does not trickle down due to the greed of thos who receive the tax breaks and they donot spent the tax savings thay hord it.
The present Stimulus package will work if we let it.

World Wide Recession: You're trying too hard to be funny. Groucho could've would've made funnier, quicker more ascetic (?) homor. I just finished re-reading a Sept. issue of Newsweek. Now that was funny. On Sept. 29th they reported it all over & Paulson as the new T-Man Superheroe. Their 6-pager then was not even an introduction. One concern I had then & now is that two much media, talk show guests & GOP want to treat it as an interlude, a brief sour note. They opine- hold your breath public, this roller coaster ride 'll be over in 10- 12 seconds. Why are they spending so many billions & attention on it? First a number of well placed people - Americans - caused the world economy to lose $10-25 trillion. With goverment help. In the U.S. maybe $5-7 T. Deregulation & no oversight, plus big hedges & shrubs caused this & we have not yet begun to legislate how to prevent it next time. Or how to control investor-bankers who must make $5-10 million a year or they're not welcome at their club. Already it's politicized for partisan profit in 2-4 years. Second, the American taxpayers & consumers are going to have to pay - not for the loss- but for the correction, which may require $2-4-6-8 T. more. Keynes was not writing for " how much or how long" but for basic principles. And not for a global economy. And we are already trying to reduce the investment in restarting the system. In 4-5 years we may know HOW BAD IT IS. If we invest more - much more now long term damage may be reduced. If we are patient & try to understand we're not buying out of season tomatoes at the supermarket, maybe we'll learn something too.

Corporations are acting wisely for their own security when they lay off workers, but those workers lose their income, and then are unable to purchase what they need. The corporations are simply recognizing that they have mnade enougy produce, and cannot sell their stuff. The answer is not just to create jobs, but to allow the people to purchase the goods they need. There is a way. The book TEAFS has a simple answer to getting each person a fair share of those goods. Visit www.Amazon.con and bring up T.E.A.F.S. in their books listing. Read the blurbs about distributing the goods through an 'Consumer Dollar' as opposed to the dollars used for capital purposes.

Read a history book people ,trickle down dosen't work ,didnt work in the 80's what did stimulate the economy was the huge government spending of the Reagan admin ,for defense and growing the government paryrolls, and still lead to recession and inflation at the end of his second term and most of the first Bush admin, de-regulation and trickle down theory is agrued by the people it will benifit the most the uber-rich and the wall street mooks who got them selves into this mess and the rest of us along with them .Tax cuts for the middle class , fair taxing for the higher brackets, and re training and education for displaced workers will bring us out of this , think about this ,the Coulters and Limbaughs and Hannitys were all saying ignore the deficit while we were spending it on their war with iraq all the trillions wasted their could get a college education for anyamerican that wanted one and re train every worker who loses their job .Jobs is the key ,working people spend money ,buy goods and services , make house payments and car payments , as long as the repubs and demos refuse to see this and listen to the self serving wall street experts this problem is not going anywhere and only gonna get worse

The reason that those with money apparently are the recipients of more money when things go good, is because they have the money to invest and the money to create jobs and the money to expand their business entities. That produces more jobs. Unless those with money do well, they cannot produce the jobs. Very simple. But perhaps not explained well.

It all comes down to this, America has had a paradigm shift in government and the private sector from serving the public to serving themselves. There is a reason for it and here it is: http://townhall.com/MediaPlayer/AudioPlayer.aspx?ContentGuid=309611f7-40ae-449f-8ef5-06063580c955 We need to get big government off our backs and adopt the Fair Tax Plan. http://www.fairtax.org/site/PageServer We need to organize and throw out politicians on both sides of the aisle and vote in people who serve the public's interests. Now is the time to get involved in telling your government reps what your opinions are. Stop whining and start being heard! As President Kennedy once said, "Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country." http://www.whitehouse.gov/

If trickle down worked so wiell why are we in this mess? Reagonomics has bled working class people dry. Before Regonomics Corporate CEO's made 42 times the average wage earner, it is now 400 times that of the average worker. He is the author of wealth redistribution.

Will someone name one program run by the government that was a financial success? Why should we think any of the new programs will be successful. How will I buy a green car at about 3 times the cost of a gas car, on my social security check, but then we are going to make sure that no one can afford to drive a car that is not green? Hmm ! I wonder where that leaves all the retired on a low income and all the young people with young families who can only afford an older car. That one program that will fail for the American People. Health care is a disaster here for many and it needs reform but socializing it will not fix it. Look at Cuba, France the UK Canada. Cuba we won't even talk about it, France my family has to buy private insurance because the government coffer are so low that it covers almost nothing. I have an elderly aunt who has no teeth because she would have to pay so much out of pocket for dentures that she would have to not buy food. (but every one has full coverage for health dental and eye care Hmm again!) Canada, my Canadian friends who ever had a job in the us keep paying their insurance premium to keep their insurance so that they can come back to the US in case of serious illness, we are not talking about a little cold here. The UK is choosing who will get cancer medication and whom to say "sorry we did not choose you". It is not perfect but it is a heck of lot better than most. Lets fix it not break worse.

This is an administration that is on a disaster course, Spending our selves into prosperity does not work! The government shoulod fix Social Security, Post Office, Medicare, Medical, and the government that is hiring 60 to 70 thousand mudsuckers at average pay of $75,000. they are called mudsuckers because they do not produce a thing but there salaries that the tax payers have to pay. When the private industries are laying off King Obama his hiring, what a joke! His 11 trillion dollar deficit is going to amount to almost 1 trillion dollars in interest payments and what happens if China and the other countries do not buy our debt? We will have to go begging to have them forgive just like other 3rd world countries do to us. Regan put 20 million jobs and he didn't create a huge deficit and he did it by lowering taxes on everyone that paid taxes. The last two years of his administration the dems said for every dollar tax increase they would cut two dollars in spending, well you know what happen the dems lied and never cut a penny in spending. They lie all the time and the president lies daily and the media gives him a pass. We need term limits and know grandfather clause. One term of four years for both senate and house with zero retirement pay except deductions for social security. Lets get the crooks out of office like Dodd, Frank, Waters, Rangel, Pelosi, Boxer, Feinstein and others. The one term would eliminate the politicians from going out and raising funds for relection from the day they were elected to the day of the next election.

Re: The Govenatior "Arnie" of California- As the populace voted down most of the budget proposals on the ballot in the recent election, His brilliant solution is to completely eliminate welfare, CalWorks, and all programs that help fund education for the disadvantaged. What does he expect us to do? It's not the little guy's fault that there are no jobs- it's politicians such as he and those of his ilk. (no to mention the sleazy bankers and wall street)We WANT to work- there's nothing out there for us! There are no such things as "Welfare Queens" those receiving assistance lead a miserable existence, and by the way, no one can stay on welfare forever, they require you to find and keep a job. It is only temporary help. What really bothers me is the elimination of educational funding. If we don't have some education and training in today's world, we'll never be able to find work! What the heck are we supposed to do? eat cake? Where's the cake? Perish? Just go away? Why, OH WHY are the poor made to suffer for their greed and crimes? Why didn't he solve the budget crises by taking a pay cut and having his staff do the same? Instead he ELIMINATED jobs that we need while he and his cronies lead their usual lavish lifestyle? And- you - YES YOU out there- what's it gonna take to get people mad enough to DEMAND some real changes NOW and get those bums out of office? If I recall correctly, that's how he got into office in the first place, because Gray Davis didn't' balance the budget, he wasn't great- but things are so much worse now. How quickly we forget. I say we storm the Govenator's mansion and get our cake- who's with me?

TOPIC: WORLD FINANCE---RECOVERY OF THE AMERICAN ECONOMY NOW**********read immediately******* Below is a copy of an email I sent T D Jakes, Minister, hoping for action. His answer in short, ad lib'd, was that "The Church" is already in too much politics. Later I learned of this website, so let me repeat the idea God gave me for turnaround of this American economy as an advisement to you. Here it is: Greetings my Brother Jakes, in the name of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. GOD HAS A PLAN FOR THE AMERICAN ECONOMY, and HERE IT IS. I was watching two preachers on TV about God transferring the wealth of the wicked into the hands of the Just. God literally touched me and imparted this wisdom to me, which I am to share with the Church, that is, those who believe God all the time. Everyone has their part to do in the recovery of the American economy just like President Obama said. Being that he is a Christian (and I can discern that), just makes this all the more easier. Because God’s People are Faith people, and are accustomed to doing something when they see nothing, the Church will play a major role in the recovery of the American economy; and the Wealth will go to those in the Church who obey his voice, only. Everyone who hears his voice will not act, but that will be okay because they are the ones who will not receive the Transfer of Wealth due to their unbelief. Likewise, those of you who believe God will act and receive the blessing. God said that if we will begin to OBEY HIS WORD TO "SPEND", IT will make the Presidential Economic Plan, (which is from God too, by the way, and will accomplish what he sent it to accomplish) more effective than we ever imagined. GOD will get behind it and his Angels will PUSH, and what would normally take years for the American economy to recover will be done in months. IT IS HIS WILL THAT WE RECOVER SWIFTLY AND NOT WAIT. It is critical that we act, because he sees everything. Ask all Christians despite their Party affiliation to put their differences aside and just obey the Word of the Lord, SPEND. The devil does not control anything down here…and we better “check” him and remind him that he has never been and never will be Lord, by obeying God’s Word for the Hour, SPEND. Its Gods plan, his will, and his way. This will not be just sporadic spending, which is mismanagement, but intelligent, strategic SPENDing, that is CORPORATE SPENDING. You see the trouble is that all the Timing of spending is normally different, and we will be merging all of that Time together, with CORPORATE SPENDING AS A GROUP. I don’t want to bore you by saying “time is money”. He showed me

It is time to take back this country. It is time we throw out the bums-it's time illegals be sent back to their respective countries. The citizens of this great country are losing their voices. We need to be heard. We need a leader to march with us on the steps of the White House. We need more tea parties and more involvement. This President and his Congress are spending us into oblivion. Health care is a joke and why if it is so good why not have all of Congress enrolled.Oh,I know why-they put a bill (sec.3116) that says that congress is exempt from signing up to this new reform. Illegals: are you kidding me? they get more from this country then the Americans-Amnesty to gang members, legal status for illegals without a background check .Temporary visas renewable indefinitely-no back taxes-in state tuition for illegals cutting the line-that's o.k. even though thousands are going the legal route. Amensty for people that have been imprisoned. Fence being reduced frkom 800 miles toi 200 miles. No border security. By the way-English not required-no big deal its only America

This energy bill is an abomination. Our taxes will go precipitously. This President is bankrupting us. How about this: sec.3116- Congress will be exempt from having to be a part of this horrible bill-they have choices.-How about immigration-a disgrace- temporary visas that are renewable indefinitely-Amnesty to gang members. Helping Mexico keep their people working in Mexico by sending tax dollars to Mexico.-No back taxes for illegals- No mention of border security-800 mile fence-now will only be 200 miles. Instate tuition, cutting the line before people that are coming in legally. LaRasa wants us to give money to the illegals to help them make an entry into this country. English not a requirement-what is happening here?

I think it is sad to see our great country going in the direction it has been. I presently live in Michigan and was not here for the last Governor's Election but cannot understand how someone like Jennifer gets re-elected into office when their performance the past term was below an acceptable level and all she does is create more unemployement and spending. Now we are seeing Barack Obama trying to turn the United States of America into the United Socialist States of America. I feel that the only resolution to the present issues of the government is to reduce drastically the amount of government officials at the local, state and federal levels and eliminate their finacial cushions. Keep them accountable for theie actions and set their salaries based perfromance and let the voters decide what their salaries should be. each year. The government has slowly been crossing off lines in the Constitution and Bill of Rights. The founders of our country are rolling over in their graves right now. Maybe the people should quit accepting these politicians and their corrupt ways and take control of our country that was founded on Christianity in addition to putting the press back into their place. Censorship on television and radio is a joke now. I grew up on Bugs Bunny and friends and they took that off the air because it is too violent. Well correct me if I am wrong but when I was in scholl the only things that occured was drinking and some drug abuse. No shootings or stabbings. Now look what the liberal government has created. A country that is afraid of everything but will now do what is ethically right for the citizens. Obama, Granhoom, and Arnold S. of Califorina all need to be excused form their offices before it is too late.

Hi there! I would like to burn a theme at this forum. There is such a thing, called HYIP, or High Yield Investment Program. It reminds of financial piramyde, but in rare cases one may happen to meet a company that really pays up to 2% daily not on invested money, but from real profits. For quite a long time, I earn money with the help of these programs. I'm with no money problems now, but there are heights that must be conquered . I get now up to 2G a day , and my first investment was 500 dollars only. Right now, I managed to catch a guaranteed variant to make a sharp rise . Turn to my blog to get additional info. http://www.theblogmoney.com

Every one knows our country is in a mess, but no one seems to know what to do about it. The recession, lack of jobs, health care, inflations, more crime, unqualifiized and criminal Politicians, waste in Medicare and Medicaid and the list goes on and on and nothing ever gets fixed. We should get rid of everyone in office and start all over from scratch.

It is for us Hispanics and American in general a controversial issue of immigration reform & in my opinion we must all contribute to give our opinion about such reform My father came illegally but from the moment he decided to stay in America he followed and respected the laws of this country. At first he contacted an attorney to process their legal papers, and after five years a permanent resident visa was granted. Like my father many people did the same & many immigrants thus built a future in this great nation. If we look more thoroughly in most cases of people still do not have their papers have had more than one opportunity to do so but they were negligent or meanness to do so. On many occasions I was helping people who had trouble expressing themselves in English; I had the chance to converse with them about different topics such as why they didn’t learn enough English as to communicate with the rest of the population or why didn’t they resolved the immigration status & the answers were very similar with some exceptions; the responses were as follows. I'm not in it because I'm going to make money and then I return to my country and I'm not going to share with these gringos my salary, when asked how long they had been in this country most of them told me between five & ten years. my next question was why don’t you hire a lawyer in this way would receive better advice (and my mind I was saying so you can stop talking so much nonsense), the response was I will not spend money on lawyers & if get cut I go and then back illegally again I want to tell those who still think that way that any country needs tax contribution in order to remains economically strong. Every person working in the country has an obligation to contribute with your taxes if you make the money here you have to pay for the right of doing so. There are not the Americans who have to learn our language; it is us who have to learn English because we are in America. When foreigners come to our countries the first thing they do is to learn our language. Why don’t we do the same here? As for the boycott to avoid being counted I can tell is that if you refuse to be counted all you do with this action is to minimize the opportunity to obtain more financial aid for such community financial aid is granted by the government to any community based on the number of people living in that county also the amount of representatives from each place depends on the number of people who live there. Ladies and gentlemen let’s make things right & aloud yourselves to be counted. The reform should only be for those who can prove they have no criminal record and they have paid their taxes for at

I'm not the smartest person in the world but I don't need to be to see what is happening, if the president and the others in charge would just stop and step back and really look at what is wrong with this world and where the real problems are maybe then we would get some real action. I'm just like all the rest of the american people on disability can't afford to leave their homes it cost to much, and they want to cut ever thing we need, Start cutting the cost of all their postions and salaries, theirs unnessaries trips, everything they say they need and don't, I could go on forever just like the rest of ameria, stop sending our jobs overseas. start creating jobs here,.start spending money for us start feeding our starving people, ( I support helping other countries) but what about our country.? What abut what is going on right here under our noses? I just don't get it, this world I just don't get it anymore?
